One of the applications for the Oculus Rift DK2 was research into the interaction with Virtual Agents. When a person uses a headset to observe a virtual world a research question was how that person would interact with a virtual person. How would the interaction between a virtual person and a real person take place. Examples are how to perform eye contact and how to do a (virtual) handshake.
A second application was the research in self driving cars. A person would be positioned in a car seat. The sensors of the car would give feedback to the virtual environment presented on the VR headset. A research question was what would happen if the car told the driver: take over from the until then autonomous driving car.
Results showed a kind of fear interaction when a truck would crash in the car and the subject was instructed to take over the driving.
